Growing up here, I fell in love with the quiet beauty of the Sonoran Desert and the bold energy of our city streets. As a photographer, I’ve seen firsthand how Arizona’s landscapes create the perfect backdrop for telling your family’s story.


Arizona is more than just a place—it’s a feeling. It’s the sound of gravel crunching under hiking boots, the hush of wind through mesquite trees, and the laughter of kids running barefoot across a field of wildflowers. It’s cozy winter sunsets that turn the mountains pink and summer monsoons that drench the earth in the smell of creosote. When I photograph families, I’m not just looking for a pretty location—I’m looking for places that feel like Arizona and like you. Over the years, I’ve discovered so many incredible spots across the state, from rocky desert trails to cozy in-home settings. Each one has a vibe all its own, and each one tells a story.


Today, I’m sharing my absolute favorite family photo locations in Arizona—places I come back to again and again because they’re just that special. Whether you’re dreaming of a classic desert sunset, a pop of urban color, or the simple magic of your own home, I’ve got you covered. Here are my top picks and why I love them so much!

1. White Tank Mountains (Waddell)


If you’re a fan of classic desert beauty, you can’t go wrong with the White Tank Mountains. This spot is one of my absolute favorites, especially during golden hour when the light is warm and dreamy. The towering saguaro cacti, sweeping mountain views, and golden desert floor create a timeless and rustic backdrop that’s perfect for family portraits.

One thing to note: we always stick to the trails here to keep the landscape beautiful and safe for everyone. The trails are easy to access and safe for little feet—making it great for families with kids of all ages. Whether you’re looking for that classic Arizona desert feel or you’re dreaming of warm, romantic images, this spot will definitely deliver.

2. Downtown Phoenix


For families with older kids or couples looking for something vibrant and fun, downtown Phoenix is a must. The murals here are bold, colorful, and packed with personality. I love using them to add a pop of color and an urban edge to your session. Plus, the different textures—brick, paint, concrete—create such a cool backdrop.

Downtown sessions also offer lots of flexibility. We can wander the streets together, stopping at different murals that catch your eye. It’s a fun and relaxed way to capture your family’s unique vibe. If you want photos that feel modern, edgy, and just a little bit unexpected, this is the place to be.

3. South Mountain


South Mountain is like the desert’s hidden playground. It has rocky overlooks, stunning views, and, of course, those iconic saguaros. I love recommending South Mountain for families who want a bit of adventure and variety in their photos. There’s plenty of room for kids to explore (under careful watch, of course), and the landscape changes so beautifully as the sun sets.

It’s also a great choice if you’re hoping for photos that show off Arizona’s unique landscape. From rocky cliffs to wide-open skies, this spot captures the desert in a way that’s both dramatic and intimate. Trust me, it’s worth the short hike!

4. Client’s Home


Don’t underestimate the power of home! In-home sessions are some of my absolute favorites because they’re so personal. Whether it’s a newborn snuggled in their nursery, a toddler climbing onto the couch, or a family baking cookies together, these sessions capture real life in a warm, cozy way.

Your home is your family’s safe space. It’s where your kids’ personalities shine brightest. Plus, it’s a stress-free option if you have little ones who might be overwhelmed by a new location. 5. Hidden Gems in South Phoenix


Finally, I have a few secret spots up my sleeve! South Phoenix has some beautiful, lesser-known locations that feel like a mini escape into the country—without the long drive. Some of these include private ranches with horses and ponies, which add a sweet, rustic touch to your session. These hidden gems are perfect if you’re dreaming of a cozy country feel or a playful session for your little ones.
