Let’s be real for a second: prepping your kids for photos can feel like gearing up for a mini mission. I mean, will they nap on time? Will someone smear snacks on their shirt right before we start? Will they smile… at all?! If you’ve ever found yourself stress-eating your coffee while wrangling shoes onto tiny feet, I see you. I am you.

But here’s the good news—this doesn’t have to be stressful! As a photographer and a mom of four (yep, I’ve been through it all—meltdowns, forgotten loveys, snack emergencies), I promise I’m here to help. My goal is for your session to feel like a fun family adventure, not a chore. So, let’s talk about how a little prep can go a long way. Here are my tried-and-true tips to help those sweet grins shine (without anyone losing their mind along the way):

1. Avoid anything new on session day.

I get it—you want the kids to look adorable in that brand-new outfit with the tags still on or those shiny new boots. But trust me on this one: if it’s itchy, stiff, or unfamiliar, they’ll let you (and me) know real fast. Go with outfits and shoes they’ve worn before or at least tried on and approved. Comfort = happy kids = happy photos.

2. Feed and water the tiny humans.

This sounds obvious, but when you’re rushing out the door, it’s easy to forget. A hangry toddler (or, let’s be honest, big kid) is no joke. Give them a meal or snack beforehand and pack some easy, mess-free snacks—think puffs, gummies, fruit snacks. And don’t forget water! Bonus tip: bribe snacks (I mean “special treats for after the session”) can work wonders.

3. Bring something familiar.

A favorite stuffed animal, blankie, or even a playlist with their favorite songs can be a game-changer. I’ve seen a kid go from tears to full-on dance party mode the second their favorite song came on. Plus, I’m always ready to queue up “Baby Shark” or whatever’s on repeat at your house these days—no judgment!

4. Hype it up like an adventure.

Kids feed off our energy. So instead of, “Okay, we have to take pictures today,” try, “We’re going to have so much fun running around and taking silly pictures!” Let them know this is about playing, exploring, and laughing. Low expectations + high energy = magic.

5. Let go of perfection.

This is a big one, and it’s where the real magic happens. I know we all dream of that one perfect shot where everyone is smiling at the camera, but honestly? Some of my favorite images come from the in-between moments. The giggles after a tickle fight, the hair-in-the-face belly laughs, the little pout that turns into a smile when mom whispers something silly. That’s your family, your story—and it’s beautiful just the way it is.

The bottom line?

I’ve got you. I come armed with all the tricks—animal sounds, silly dances, goofy faces—you name it. Your job? Just show up, love on your crew, and enjoy the ride. I’ll take care of the rest.
